Baked Apples Recipe

baked apples

So what do you do with your apples if you have lots and lots of them? Aside from making your own applesauce, apple jam and apple cake you can also make these oven-baked apples! For this recipe, I used 8 apples. Just adjust the quantities of each ingredient if you’d make less or more than that.

You will need:

8 apples, washed, dried and cored

2/3 cup brown sugar, packed

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

8 small cubes of unsalted butter or olive oil

1 1/2 cups hot water

Pre-heat your oven 177ºC.

Core the apples.

In a small bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon. With the use of a small funnel, fill your apples with the sugar-cinnamon mixture.

Top each apple with a small cube of unsalted butter. If you want a healthier option, then drizzle each apple with olive oil.

Place your trays inside the oven and fill the trays with hot water, 3/4 cups of hot water for each tray in my case as I used two cooking trays. Bake your apples until they’re tender, between 40-45 minutes.

In between the baking period, you can open your oven and with a spoon, cover each apple with the caramel sauce.

Enjoy warm or cold. Enjoy it alone or accompanied with freshly whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or some apple cake, why not!

UPDATE: My husband asked me to place some raisins inside the apples. He asked for more raisins and less sugar mixture. I also opted to using olive oil! I tried it and he said it tastes better! You can also use the same procedure to bake pears.

  1. This looks really good, but I was wondering if I read it right,if you core the apple then the sugar and cinnamon will mix with the water, and this is what you spoon over apples. If this is so then why not just melt it in pan and spoon it over. Just asking if it would end up the same.

    • hi, Debbie! thanks for your comment. I have never thought of that now have I tried it. I actually core the apple then fill the cored centers with the raisins then the sugar + cinnamon. The water I add would also provide moisture so the apples won’t scorch. the water will typically be reduced in quantity and some of the sugar and cinnamon has mixed with the apples. I don’t want to throw that delicious liquid so I spoon it over the apples ^^)
